Maintaining dreadlocks involves regular care and attention to keep them clean, healthy, and well-formed. Here’s a guide to help you maintain your dreads:

1. Keep Your Dreads Clean:

Washing: Wash your dreads every 1-2 weeks with a residue-free shampoo (make sure it’s specifically made for dreads or natural hair). Regular shampoos can leave product build-up, which could affect the locking process.

Rinsing thoroughly: Make sure to rinse out all the shampoo to avoid build-up.

2. Drying Properly:

Drying Dreads: Dreads can take a while to dry because the hair is tightly packed. After washing, try to dry them with a towel or let them air dry, but avoid using a blow dryer on high heat.

Avoid Wet Hair for Too Long: Since wet dreads can develop mildew or mold, make sure your hair is completely dry before covering it.

3. Retwisting and Tightening:

Retwist regularly: Depending on how fast your hair grows and how tight your dreads are, retwisting (or interlocking) your roots every 4-6 weeks helps maintain the shape and prevent loose hair from undoing the lock.

Palm Rolling: This technique involves rolling your dreads between your palms to help them stay tight.

Interlocking: This is another method to tighten the roots, where you pull the hair through the root of the dread, creating a “lock.”

4. Avoid Product Build-Up:

Avoid using heavy products (like oils or creams) that can build up in your hair and cause it to become greasy or heavy.

Use light oils like jojoba or argan oil sparingly, if needed.

5. Sleep Care:

Wear a Durag or Scarf: Protect your dreads while sleeping by wearing a silk or satin scarf/bonnet, or sleep on a silk pillowcase. This prevents frizz and breakage.

Use a dreadlock pillowcase if you don’t want to wear a scarf.

6. Separate Dreads:

Separation: Periodically separate your dreads to prevent them from merging together. This can be done during retwisting or when washing your hair.

7. Preventing Frizz:

Regularly palm-roll your dreads to reduce frizz.

Keep the roots neat and tight with regular maintenance.

Avoid touching your dreads too much during the day, as this can introduce frizz.

8. Trim Ends:

After a while, the ends of dreads may become thin or frazzled. If needed, trim the ends to maintain a healthy look and avoid split ends.

9. Hydration:

Keep your scalp and hair moisturized by using light sprays (like water with a few drops of essential oil) or light oils, especially if your scalp gets dry.

10. Healthy Scalp Care:

Scalp Massage: Gently massage your scalp to promote blood circulation, which will help your hair grow healthily.

Treating Itchy Scalp: If you experience itching or flaking, consider using a tea tree oil scalp treatment or a specialized dreadlock scalp spray.

By following these steps and being consistent, your dreadlocks will stay clean, neat, and healthy! Are you in the process of getting dreads, or do you have them already?

If your scalp is oily, you may need to wash your hair more frequently, while if your scalp is dry, you may need to wash your hair less often.

Here are some tips for washing 4c hair:

Use a sulfate-free shampoo to avoid stripping the hair of its natural oils.

Avoid using hot water, as it can be drying to the hair and scalp. Instead, use lukewarm or cool water.

Massage the scalp gently with the pads of your fingers to loosen any build-up or dirt.

Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to detangle the hair, starting at the ends and working your way up to the roots.

After washing, apply a conditioner to the hair, concentrating on the ends.

Rinse the hair thoroughly to remove all product build-up.

Gently squeeze or pat the hair dry with a towel, and avoid rubbing it vigorously, as this can cause breakage.

It’s also a good idea to use a leave-in conditioner or hair oil to help moisturize and protect the hair. You can also use protective styles, such as braids or twists, to help reduce the need for frequent washing and styling.

s</p> <iframe sandbox=”allow-popups allow-scripts allow-modals allow-forms allow-same-origin” style=”width:120px;height:240px;” marginwidth=”0″ marginheight=”0″ scrolling=”no” frameborder=”0″ src=”//rcm-na.amazon-adsystem.com/e/cm?lt1=_blank&bc1=000000&IS2=1&bg1=FFFFFF&fc1=000000&lc1=0000FF&t=ttakes0a-20&language=en_CA&o=15&p=8&l=as4&m=amazon&f=ifr&ref=as_ss_li_til&asins=B083VY2G7D&linkId=c6b9063c04e18ea79da5d86fc90abaf6″>

There are several things that people with black hair can do to take care of and Maintain Healthy Black Hair:

Avoid heat styling as much as possible. Heat styling can cause damage to the hair, so it is best to avoid it or use it sparingly. When heat styling is necessary, use a heat protectant spray to help reduce damage.

Use a wide-tooth comb. Black hair is often more prone to tangles and knots, so it is important to use a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle the hair. This will help prevent breakage and damage.

Avoid tight hairstyles. Tight hairstyles, such as cornrows or ponytails, can cause traction alopecia, which is a type of hair loss caused by pulling on the hair. It is best to avoid these types of hairstyles or to be careful to not pull the hair too tight when styling.

Use a sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfates are harsh detergents that can strip the hair of its natural oils, leading to dryness and breakage. Look for shampoos that are sulfate-free to help preserve the natural oils in your hair.

Moisturize your hair. Black hair is often prone to dryness, so it is important to moisturize it regularly. Use a leave-in conditioner or hair oil to help keep the hair hydrated and healthy.

Trim your hair regularly. Trimming your hair every 6-8 weeks can help remove damaged ends and promote healthy hair growth.

It is also a good idea to talk to a dermatologist or a hair care professional for personalized recommendations on how to care for your hair. They can help you develop a hair care routine that is tailored to your specific needs.

Deep conditioning. Using a deep conditioning treatment on a regular basis can help nourish and repair damaged hair.

Protein treatment. Protein treatments can help strengthen and repair damaged hair, particularly if the damage is due to chemical treatments or heat styling.

Trimming: Regularly trimming damaged hair can help remove split ends and encourage healthy growth.

Avoid heat styling. Heat styling can cause damage to hair, so it is important to avoid using heat styling tools as much as possible.

Protect hair when styling. If you do need to use heat styling tools, use a heat protectant spray to help protect your hair.

What is Hair Porosity? – When we are talking about hair porosity, it refers to the hair’s ability to absorb moisture. Depending on the condition of your hair, your cuticle layers could be very open allowing a lot of moisture to enter. On the opposite side of the spectrum, your hair’s cuticle layers could be very tight and preventing moisture to then penetrate it. High porosity means your hair is very porous and allows a lot of moisture in. Low porosity means that your hair is less porous and resistant to moisture.

Conducting a float test is quick and easy to help determine which category your hair fits.

Hair porosity float test:

1• Fill a glass or bowl with room temperature water.

2• Take a couple strands of your clean hair (from your comb or brush) and put them in the water. *Clean hair is important. If you have oils or products on your hair, it will alter your results.

3• Watch it for 2-4 minutes.

If your hair strands stay afloat, this means that you have low porosity. Your hair is resistant to moisture. This doesn’t mean that your hair is unhealthy; it means that you need to help your hair retain moisture. Try using light hair products with humectants. Also wash and condition with warm water & deep condition with dryers.

If your hair strands sunk in the water, then your hair is highly porous. It easily absorbs moisture and is mostly likely prone to frizz. Try adding some protein rich products to your hair regimen, such as avocado as a deep condition. Porous hair needs protein to fill in the gaps. Try using hair products with proteins such as aloe and wheat protein.

What’s the difference between Hydrating & Moisturizing?

Moisturizing products actually try to improve the hair by decreasing water loss. However, dehydrated hair lacks water and needs to be hydrated with hydrating products daily. Dry hair essentially lacks oil and needs to be moisturized with moisturizing products.

Hydrate

The process when using humectants, proteins, amino acids and critical vitamins that penetrate the hair fiber. Infusing and improving the absorption of water and nutrients so that the hair holds and retains moisture

Hydrating formulations typically designed to increase the moisture content in hair strands. When you use humectants, the ingredients that withdraw moisture from the air, are retained for your hair. You will know them by their most common presentations: Oil and Grease. Among the more well-known humectants in the product ingredients listings is glycerin. A powerful hydrator that pulls water into the deepest layers of hair and skin.

Moisturizing the Hair

When using the process of using butters and oils to coat the OUTER surface of the hair fiber. Which seals and locks down the hair shaft, so moisture can not get in or out of the fiber.

Formulated moisturizers used to smooth your hair cuticle to achieve a softer texture. Moisturizers achieve this by forming a barrier on the hair fiber when applied.

This barrier is made up of emollients, or hydrophobic oils that act as anti-humectants or sealers.

The beauty of moisturizers are that they work overtime to attract water to your hair.

HYDRATE FIRST

Butters/Oils – used to coat the OUTER surface of the hair fiber. Sealing and locking down the hair shaft so moisture is trapped and can’t get in or out of the fiber.

When moisturizing, HYDRATE the hair FIRST to penetrate, absorb & nourish the follicles from within. Then apply the moisturizer, to deeply nourish the exterior. This is where you achieve the strength, shine & optimal hair health.
